biography

To gaze at a work by Giorgio Conta is to lose oneself in the meanders of the history of
sculpture and the history of sculptors: one of his works inevitably brings to mind
Michelangelo's Prigioni, the most contemporary works of the Renaissance master; the
refined work of Brustolon, the sculptor of wood par excellence; but one also feels the
elegant Baroque touch of Bernini and the graceful, neoclassical one of Canova. He
transports us to a collective past, even if not directly experienced by each of us, but which
is part of our genetic make-up as Italians, heirs to the art and beauty handed down over
the centuries and by the generations that preceded us, while at the same time making us
come face to face with the contemporary nature of the form and materials he uses. The
perfect union of Trentino tradition, the work of the greats of the past and contemporary art.
Conta has assimilated all the best that the art of previous centuries could teach him, but
translating it into the new century, where research into material and technique has become
the preponderant, if not the main, part of a contemporary artist's journey.
His sculptural work, for example, is based on the use of different types of wood, which also
means always different difficulty in execution, on experimentation with different types of
modern materials to be skilfully blended with traditional ones to create ever new and
fabulous visual renditions and sensations, even proposing the possibility of combining
"classical" sculpture with new media.
Admiring Conta's work is a pleasure, an incredible opportunity to appreciate the present
and future of sculpture.

Giorgio Conta, sculptor and painter, has created monumental works in Italy and abroad,
including the 5-metres high bronze monument for the St Mary Catholic Cemetary and
Mausoleum in Chicago, the monument for Fiumicino airport and the one depicting P. Kino
at Segno in Trentino.
Maurizio Vanni, Valerio Dehò, Luigi Marsiglia, Massimiliano Castellani, Renzo
Francescotti, Paolo Levi, Stefania Severi and Pupi Avati have written about him.
In 2010 he was received by H.H. Benedict XVI to whom he presented the sketch of the
bronze group created for the sanctuary of Pietralba (BZ)
At the invitation of Vittorio Sgarbi in 2015, he took part in the exhibition "Treasures of Italy"
at Expo in Milan and in the contemporary collateral section of the exhibition "from Giotto to
de Chirico" at MuSa in Salò.
In 2016 he participated in the Context art Miami and Contemporary Istanbul exhibitions
with the Liquid Art System gallery.
In 2017 he is invited by Mart to exhibit two works in the exhibition "Legno | Lën | Holz" at
the Civic Gallery of Trento and participates in Milano Scultura (Step Art Fair) at the
invitation of critic Valerio Dehò.

In 2019, Maurizio Vanni, art critic and director of LuCCA, Lucca Center of Contemporary
art, hosts a solo exhibition of his work in the museum in conjunction with the exhibition
dedicated to Fortunato Depero.

Giorgio Conta was born in Cles in 1978 and lives and works in Monclassico in Val di Sole
(TN). He grew up in a stimulating environment and from a very young age came into
contact with various cultural figures, including the pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, a
family friend. He trained at the sculpture school in Ortisei, also devoting himself to drawing
and painting. Today, he participates in various solo and group exhibitions.
His artistic research focuses mainly on the figure.
Which can be dreamlike wrapped in the mystery that contains unknowns, restlessness,
wonder, enigmas of existence. Life, in all its forms, has always been a cause for reflection
for him.
He does not understand the figure as being in a fragmentary state of ruin, in the belief that
it is aesthetically more eloquent and meaningful than when it was complete and intact. The
fragment is not to be understood as a piece of broken object, a detached part or a splinter
of a lost and no longer attainable wholeness, but rather as a building, an assembling to
reach wholeness, which can then be completed in the eye and mind of the beholder.
Instead of fragments, it would be better to define them as detached, isolated "parts",
"particulars", "details" placed in the foreground and thus highlighted.
These details are elements of a puzzle that can be ideally recomposed, as a similitude of
contemporary man "fragmented" inwardly in a sort of new palingenesis.
Giorgio counts the inspiration for the forms of his sculptures mainly in the nature of the
woods and mountains that surround him.
